Who was the last major league baseball team to integrate?

Which Major League Baseball team was the last one to put a black man on their team? Who was that player?

  1. Boston Red Sox - Pumpsie Green. He made his first appearance in July of 1959, 12 years after Jackie Robinson and five years after every other AL team had their first black player.
  2. Boston Red Sox in 1959. I live in L.A., which is saturated with a mixture of hispanics, blacks, whites, asians, middle eastern, etc. Last time I watched a Red Sox game on TV, I couldn't pick out ONE non-white fan in the stands. Not saying there wasn't one, but every single solitary fan I could see was white. Even 20 years ago, when the NBA had long been dominated by blacks, the Boston Celtics roster had several white players: Larry Byrd, Kevin McCale, plus several other whites - way more than any other team. Strange. So no surprise it's Boston - a full 12 years after Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier. Not exactly jumping on the integrated band-wagon.
  3. Red Sox.
  4. In response to ironwood, I am a season ticket holder for the Red Sox and very rarely see many blacks if any at Fenway. Once there was a black guy who sat next to me and said, "Where are all the blacks?" He saw a black guy selling hot dogs and said, "Oh, they're working." Just giving you some perspective.
