What was the longest major league baseball at-bat in terms pitches?

I'm looking for the longest major league baseball at-bat in terms of pitch count. Example, it took Roger Clemens 17 pitches before he finally got Sammy Sosa to pop out.

Public Comments

  1. Luke Appling - 24
  2. Ive seen Alex Cora foul off 21 and then hit a home run
  3. Cora fouled off 21 straight or it took 21 pitches total in his at-bat?
  4. I can't say for sure, but Richie Ashburn was legendary for his at-bats. He once hit a lady with a foul and while they were taking her to seek treatment, he hit her again!
  5. Cora had 21 one time. I saw the game
  6. I also read that it took 24 pitches to Luke Appling. As a side-line trivia question for you: What's the longest time it took to get a batter out? Try an hour and a half?? Huh?? Mike Shannon was at the plate when the umpire called a rain delay with the count of two-balls and no strikes. When play resumed Shannon walked... but the next batter flied out... an hour and a half later. .
  7. Luke Appling , White Sox (1930 to 1950), is said to hold that distinction. The reason I say distinction is because there isn't really a stat. kept on this. Supposedly, he had pitch counts that ranged from 19 to 24. He once battled Bob Feller with four fouls, one ball, six fouls, one ball, fourteen fouls, and then two more balls for a walk. Pat Listach once took 17 pitches in an at bat, when he was with the Milwaukee Brewers in 1992.
